Cathrynn Brown (R. NM) Introduces a Bill that Criminalizes Victims of Rape

Happy Friday Butterflies!

I hope all is well where you are.

If you are in the United States-New Mexico especially-the weather is fine but there is an ugliness in the atmosphere that has your wings in a bunch. I know mine are.

***WARNING! This is not my usual happy post, so if you are having a good day and wish not to ruin it, you might want to visit another article on the Butterfly Bridge 🙂

Anger is not a word to describe how I felt when I read this news report this afternoon; RAGE is more like it. How many of you have heard of this House Bill 206 that Republican Representative Cathrynn Brown introduced on Wednesday?

Well apparently, this lawmaker introduced a bill that would make it illegal for a woman who is raped or sexually molested by incest, to abort  any fetus that was conceived via such a brutal act. AND if the VICTIM of rape/incest were to abort such a fetus, that person would be convicted, as a FELON, of tampering with evidence.

I’m so angry, I can barely type….

Here is a summary via the Huffington Post:

A Republican lawmaker in New Mexico introduced a bill on Wednesday that would legally require victims of rape to carry their pregnancies to term in order to use the fetus as evidence for a sexual assault trial.

House Bill 206, introduced by state Rep. Cathrynn Brown (R), would charge a rape victim who ended her pregnancy with a third-degree felony for “tampering with evidence.”

“Tampering with evidence shall include procuring or facilitating an abortion, or compelling or coercing another to obtain an abortion, of a fetus that is the result of criminal sexual penetration or incest with the intent to destroy evidence of the crime,” the bill says.

Third-degree felonies in New Mexico carry a sentence of up to three years in prison.

Pat Davis of ProgressNow New Mexico, a progressive nonprofit opposing the bill, called it “blatantly unconstitutional” on Thursday.

“The bill turns victims of rape and incest into felons and forces them to become incubators of evidence for the state,” he said. “According to Republican philosophy, victims who are ‘legitimately raped’ will now have to carry the fetus to term in order to prove their case.“ (from the Huffington Post)

Well, I guess for the people who have been “legitimately” raped, as the GOP firmly believes is the only way a child can be conceived from such a brutal act, this might make sense. Sure, I’ll keep the child of the person who brutally raped me or forced me into an incestuous relationship for years….cause if I don’t, I’ll get a FELONY Obstruction charge to go with my brutalization, humiliation, shame, and suffering…by the way…I’ll just put all those feeling to the side while I’m raising this child that was forced upon me by my RAPIST and the United States Government….REALLY?

Why don’t we just give the Constitution of the United States of America to paper mills and let them turn it into toilet paper, because apparently that’s all it’s good for. The Constitutional Rights of the people of the United States of America doesn’t mean SQUAT to these people!

First of all, I am appalled that a WOMAN could even make such a request and THEN have the NERVE to try to defend it by saying that the law would “protect” women and “deter” sex offenders. Just how in the hell does that work?!  Thousands of rapes go unreported everyday because women are afraid of backlash, shame, etc. How many rape VICTIMS will report a rape crime knowing that they would not only have to keep a child that was conceived by the sexual ASSAULT but they could go to JAIL for not keeping the child?!

Secondly, how DARE a Cathrynn Brown use her position to manipulate the system for her own personal beliefs? This entire bill is nothing more than an attempt to bypass Roe V Wade and inflect a Pro Choice political agenda onto the women of New Mexico. That is all this is-an sorry attempt to achieve her personal agenda; which is totally disgusting….

And Finally, how in the WORLD is this even Constitutional?! How can you threaten to charge a VICTIM with a crime of obstruction for not wanting to keep a child that would constantly remind them of the ASSAULT that they endured? !Yes, there are some women who have kept a child conceived out of rape or incest; and I applaud them. But not everyone has the strength to do that, and this type of decision is up to the woman, not the damn government.

Can ya’ tell I’m upset?!

There is some good news to this story. The bill is unlikely to pass because Democrats hold the majority of the seats and most likely will vote it down. But, there is always room for the “unlikely” to happen, so we have to stay on guard. So you best believe I will be keeping a close eye on this one….

This war on women in America and around the world is getting ugly. Women are joining the ranks of the oppressor. Some of them are in positions of authority…which is scary and sad.

Time to get our wings ready, cause if we are going to win this war we have to make sure we are ready for the long flight ahead of us!

I hope my rant didn’t upset you too much; I get that way sometimes. And there is nothing wrong with getting upset about the things we care about. I care about each and every one of you and it is my deepest desire that we all be able to live freely so that we can each walk in our purpose and destiny. Finding our purpose and walking in our true destinies is the only way that the world can experience any real peace.

With that, I bid you well wishes and limitless skies today.  It’s a little cold and snowy in some parts of the world, but FLYING conditions are good, nonetheless. So FLY high this weekend and let the sun bathe your wings 🙂

Love to you!

  1. Like I said earlier today, you really can’t fix stupid. Legitimate rape? Is there such a thing? At what point are women going to wise up and figure out that any law aimed at taking rights away from women will eventually take away what equality we’ve managed to achieve over the past few decades. It’s one thing to see men out there making women look like they can’t be trusted to decide what’s best for their own bodies (we’re used to being victimized and belittled by them), but for other women to back something that so blatantly labels an act of self-protection as criminal is appalling. For a society that doesn’t like to be forced to pay taxes or help the poor, there sure are a lot of people out there who are completely okay with letting men force themselves upon women and then allowing the women to suffer the consequences while the attacker retains bragging rights for spreading his seed. Ridiculous.
