“Half The Sky: Turning Oppression Into Opportunity” Kristoff and WuDunn

In honor of Day of the Girl, I wanted to recommend a good book to read that will help you learn, educate and celebrate Girl Day with authority, awareness and awesomeness! I know, a lot to ask from a book. But, I think I have just the one…..

Half The Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity by Nicholas Kristoff and Sheryl WuDunn-the perfect book for International Day of the Girl!

I’ve read a couple of books the over the last few weeks. But none grabbed my attention like Half The Sky. The book, written by the dynamic husband and wife duo Kristoff and WuDunn, is a book unlike any I’ve ever read-and I’ve read TONS!

The entire book is an ode to the empowerment of women everywhere. The authors introduce you to amazing women around the world that have actually turned oppression into opportunity.

So ground breaking is this book that it sparked an international movement that brings together various forms of communication media-music, social media, documentaries, online games-for one cause: Female Empowerment. PBS released a four hour docu-event (my word:) ) showcasing the Half The Sky Movement.

Now, I know what some of you are saying, “Geesh, everything these days is a movement.” You’re right; the word “movement” is the latest victim of media hijacking for the sake of marketing and publicity.

But, the Half The Sky Movement is not a publicity stunt nor is it a media sales campaign: Half The Sky IS a Movement! Millions of people around the world are coming together under the mantra “Women Hold Up Half the Sky” because of this amazing book.

Here’s an excerpt from the website about the book:

The central moral challenge of our time is reaching a tipping point. Just as slavery was the defining struggle of the 19th century and totalitarianism of the 20th, the fight to end the oppression of women and girls worldwide defines our current century.

Hidden in the overlapping problems of sex trafficking and forced prostitution, gender-based violence, and maternal mortality is the single most vital opportunity of our time — and women are seizing it. From Somaliland to Cambodia to Afghanistan, women’s oppression is being confronted head on and real, meaningful solutions are being fashioned. Change is happening, and it’s happening now. ~HalfTheSky~

The women profiled in this book make it powerful. Kristoff and WuDunn brilliantly present these women, their families, their children, their cultures, traditions and their circumstances to the reader in high definition: meaning the stories are not flat second hand accounts that these authors came across. You can tell they actually interacted with these women.

It was hard for me to put this book down because I felt such a connection with each of the women. I swear, it was like I met each one of them personally. Each one had her own story, but the theme was similar: all of them were fighters!  You can feel the strength and determination in each one.  From breaking free from a brothel in Cambodia to shutting down a low down thug and his tyrannical grip on a small village, these women are amazing!

At times I felt a little jealous of Nicholas Kristoff’s opportunity to meet such amazing women. It was at those times of jealousy that Kristoff reminded me that there are thousands more women out there that each one of us can connect with, encourage, advocate for and help. All we have to be is willing.

The end of the book is dedicated to ways in which the reader can get involved with the fight to empower women right now. I really appreciate this portion of the book.

I totally recommend this book to anybody, man, woman, child or Butterfly that is interested in the empowerment of the human race. I read a saying recently that said, “If you teach a man, you have taught a man. But if you teach a woman, you have taught a generation.” I don’t know who wrote the quote, but it speaks volumes to me. When we empower women, we empower the entire race.
